La Galería Nacional de Escocia en Edimburgo se ha convertido en el mundo de Andy Warhol, con latas de sopa Campbell que cubren las neoclásicas columnas de una de las entradas al edificio.
Este artista norteamericano de Pennsylvania fue una de las máximas figuras del Pop Art, movimiento de los años 50 que destacaba la sociedad de consumo y sus iconos. Empezó su carrera como ilustrador comercial para marcas tan importantes como Coca-Cola o Campbell's. Fue también en esta etapa de los 60 cuando empezaría ha exponer su trabajo con retratos de celebridades como Marilyn Monroe o Liza Minnelli entre otros, gracias a una nueva técnica que permitía convertir las fotografías que tomaba en pantalla de seda y así a su vez en una perfecta imprenta sobre el lienzo.
Sin embargo a mi me interesa uno de sus auto retratos en 1978 "Strangulation" donde Warhol aparece siendo estrangulado por dos manos que rodean su cuello. En 1968 Warhol fue herido gravemente de un disparo y esto aumentó más aún su miedo existente a la muerte. En la pintura, no solo se refleja ese miedo, sino también el odio que el procesaba tener hacia su imagen. El retrato consta de una secuencia de la misma imagen en distintas tonalidades. Lo que impacta de esta obra modernista es su expresión, como transmite ese sentido de angustia y miedo que hace estremecer.
Este tema de la muerte y el desastre se acentuará en los 80 en la temática de Warhol donde hace una serie de trabajos en blanco y negro sobre los desastres en la sociedad americana, como "Suicidio" y su serie de calaveras donde también se auto retrata.
Merece la pena ver la obra de este polémico artista que sin duda no te dejará indiferente. En Edimburgo sólo estará hasta este domingo, pero siempre se puede ir a la fundación de Andy Warhol en su cuidad natal, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania en los Estados Unidos.

The National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh has become Andy Warhol's world with Campbell's soup cans covering the neo-classical columns of one of the entries in the building.
This North-American artist from Pennsylvania was one of the most important figures of the Pop-Art, movement of the 50's which highlighted the consumption society and its icons. His career started as a commercial designer for brands such as Coca-Cola or Campbell's. It was also in that decade of the 60's when he would start to do exhibitions of his celebrities portraits like Liza Minnelli and Marilyn Monroe amongst others, thanks to a new technique which allowed him to turn photographic images of the stars into silkscreen, a form of template for printing.
However, I am interested in one of his self-portraits of 1978 'Strangulation' where Warhol appears being strangulated by two hands around his neck. In 1968 Warhol was shot and critically injured, this experience heightened his fears about death. In the portraits is not only showed this fear, but also the rejection he admitted to have about his physical aspect. The painting is a sequence of the same picture of him in different colours.
The sense of fear and distress shaking the viewer's feelings is what it makes this work very impressive.
The topic of disaster and death would be even more frequent in Warhol's work in the decade of the 80's, in which he would showed a series of paintings in black and white about the disasters of the American society, like in 'Suicide' or the different skull's paintings including his self-portrait with a skull.
The work of this controversial artist will not let you without reaction, it is worth to see. In Edinburgh it will only be until this Sunday, but you could always go to the Andy Warhol Foundation in his native city, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the States.
